Flexible Working
Presenting an exciting opportunity for an experienced, energetic, commercially astute, accountancy qualified individual to develop, from the ground floor, this newly established position, in one of the UK’s oldest and most respected education charities.
Shaftesbury Young People [SYP] is over 170 years old and is dedicated to the education of, and assistance to, the most disadvantaged and excluded children and young people. With education centres in London, The Midlands, the East of England and Medway/Kent, the charity has exciting plans to expand its reach and influence to more young people in many more parts of the UK and to move into social enterprise projects.
Like most charity based organisations, SYP has faced significant challenges sustainably financing its operations and we are keen to develop profitable commercial enterprises that will assist us in this process. Based at the Bromley London Office, the post holder will lead this element of the charity’s work, while maintaining and improving our financial and accounting processes. In doing this, the post holder will be a key member of the CEO’s senior management team.
You will be qualified in accountancy and hold a recognised UK accountancy qualification. A further business qualification at graduate level will be a distinct advantage. Experience of managing a small team will be essential, as will responsibility for some elements of commercial development. The ability, dedication, empathy and energy to work towards SYP’s strategic targets, with the minimum of direct supervision is essential.
Although based at the Bromley Office and reporting directly to the Chief Executive, flexibility in work location is encouraged and mobility will be an advantage. Innovative thinking will be the key to your success in this role. You will be a ‘finisher’, clearly motivated by end results. Prior experience in a senior role is not as important as the possessing the right skills, dedication and attitude. Experience in the charitable sector is not necessary, some experience in the private commercial sector is essential.
Applicants for this position should, in the first instance, reply by e mail, with a full CV, an informative covering statement of no more than 2 pages of A4 size to:
